Our master Jazz Improvisation Instructor, Rick Rossi, is an Grammy award winning performer, studio session player and plays all of the woodwinds. He has his own system of teaching jazz improvisation which is a proven system where he can take a complete beginner to an intermediate level in just 4 months. (Check his videos of his students on Youtube at the bottom of this page). He will also prepare your child to be ready for concert band, auditions and the jazz ensemble if they are in a band school program.

All of our improvisation teachers are university trained educators and experienced performers. You can learn to improvise in any style you like:  jazz, blues, folk, metal and all pop styles and all instruments, including Piano, Guitar, Voice, Violin, Saxophone etc. Renting musical instruments usually starts at $40.00 per month and you can rent to buy. Your teacher is experience in finding quality affordable instruments and can help you with renting or buying before the music lessons start.

7 or 8 years old is a good time to start lessons on the saxophone, clarinet or flute. Starting much earlier most students will have trouble holding the saxophone and getting enough air. It's better to start them on piano or recorder (which is a relative of the saxophone and uses many of the same fingerings).

If you need help, just give us a call and we can discuss any concerns or questions that you have.

After each lesson, the student will go home with a clear homework assignment. We also offer for no extra charge to use our Teaching service Teacherzone.com which is an online system with examples of the songs and exercises that the student is working on.

Jazz Improvisation classes are offered every day of the week. Just call us to find out what times are still available!

Here's what students are saying about our improvisation music lessons:
No matter if you are a beginner or an experienced player, we have an

Easy Step by Step System for Improvisers

In my method I will teach you how to play a rock solid solo in just 3 months without a lot of boring scales and theory that bogs you down and makes you want to give up playing.

It’s an easy system in which I’ve have broken it down into the most basic necessities for a great solo. that takes all the thinking out and just programs your ear and fingers. It’s so fast that I’m amazed every time I start a new student and see their progress.

It’s the fastest 3 step system ever to:
  1. Develop your sound like a pro
  2. Teach you how to play musical phrases
  3. Teach you how to play and improvise on all your favorite songs

Pick any style of jazz, rock or blues and I will help you learn the secrets to mastering it.

If you’re frustrated with your solo ability and can’t find a teacher who breaks it down and takes the mystery out of it, give me a call! I have a proven method that breaks through all the common barriers, you won’t believe how simple it is. Your solos will start flowing without any thinking which just gets in the way.

This method takes all the thinking out of your playing so your head and fingers will get out of the way and you’ll learn how to trust your ear to guide you through just like your favorite players. It’s not as hard as it may seem to you right now.

There are no tricks — just a simple step by step method that you can learn in 3 music lessons and in 3 months you’ll be applying it to all your favorite songs you want to solo on.

This is a fun method that gets you playing real music right away instead of just exercises and scales. As a part of the training you will receive a slow blues track (piano, bass and drums) that you can practice along with. In 3 months you will be a new player, soloing with confidence and catching all the chord changes.

Jazz Improvisation Lessons
1. Great sax playing starts with great sound and technique

My effective exercises will ix your sound difficulties in the very first lesson. Combined with sound production, you will make unusually fast progress without doing a lot of the boring scales and corny nursery rhymes in most books.

2. Creativity is the key to making you inspired to practice.
Once we establish your sound, we teach you songs and how to make the saxophone sound cool, how to take a melody and make it all your own. After that, I will teach you how to improvise on that song with a method that will show you how easy improvising is.

3. Apply what you've learned to the real world.
After you've learned how to get a good sound and improvise, we teach you to play all of your favorite songs. You will play to full band background tracks and get ready to play with your friends, or school band, jam sessions, and local bands so that you can begin to play with professional level bands.

My job is to help you play the music YOU want to play.

Whether you you want to start a career in music or just play for fun, I will help you devise a plan that will get you there in the quickest way possible. When you take Saxophone lessons with us, you’ll not only be getting the technical and creative sides of playing the instrument but also how to apply it to the real world. Without finding other musicians to play with, it’s hard to stay inspired so we will be using background tracks to practice with. We also help you find musicians to jam with so you have real life experiences playing music in a band.
Read what students are saying about  lessons:
"I found Rick online and sit on all saxophone lessons so I know exactly what's going on. I was amazed at how fast my son was able to learn not only to play and develop a great sound but also to improvise. After a few lessons, I could tell Rick's approach and method of teaching is so unique. His system really works!
We are beyond happy to see how our son improved and gained confidence playing his saxophone in just a few weeks. He is only 12 years old and is now continuing with jazz exercises. He enjoys the chance to pick a song to play along with his instrument under Rick's guidance. For someone with his long resume, Rick is very friendly, kind, down to earth, and passionate about teaching. Obviously, he loves to teach and truly cares about his students progress. We are so grateful to have found Rick as our son's saxophone teacher. We highly recommend him!"
- Angie Crosthwait
“My son is (9) years old and a beginning clarinet student. Rick Rossi has been giving him lessons in Burbank for a little over a year now and I highly recommend him. Rick is a great teacher: he combines deep expertise in music with the calm, friendly patience that is so essential in a music teacher (especially one who teaches elementary school kids). He notices the little things that are important to catch and correct early on, but is also aware that learning music can and should be an enjoyable experience. My son has made an amazing amount of progress in a short amount of time with Rick’s help. I wish he had been my teacher when I was a kid! As a bonus, he is also responsive and easy to communicate with."

What you can expect from Saxophone Lessons
We create a custom lesson plan for each student but here is the basic outline:
5-10 minutes: Work on your tone and technique for warm ups
First music lessons will concentrate on this but as the student develops, we will spend only 5 minutes on warm up exercises. This helps you understand the value of using tone and technique exercises to get everything working so you’re ready to play music better and quicker. Each technique will be explained and/or demonstrated in a recording that you can take home and practice with.

10 minutes: Work on Playing Melodies of Interesting Songs You Want to Learn
The second part of the lesson helps you apply the warmup to the songs you want to learn.
We will pick songs together based on your level and style interest. I will help you make it sound like a professional sax player with expression techniques: short and long articulations, crescendos, vibrato and bending pitches like bluesy players use to make it sound soulful and musical. This part is also explained and demonstrated in a recording that you take home with you.

10 min: Work on Improvising (jamming) to the Song
This is the most creative part of the lesson where you are free to create your own lines. Eventually we will record you playing the melody and improvising to it in my studio. I will send you the mp3 to listen to, show your family and friends or even upload to social media sites where you can begin to create you own online presence and attract other musicians.

Last 2 minutes: Set up a lesson plan for practicing at home for the week
This is one of the most important parts of the lesson. All through the lesson I will be adding demonstrations and explanations of how to practice during the week on a recording that you can take home with you. It’s the best way to ensure you’re practicing correctly without creating any bad habits, and it makes practicing more fun!

One Other Unique Feature of Your Weekly Music Lessons
I encourage you to send me recordings of your practice sessions right from your smart phone so I can guide you throughout the week and correct any mistakes that might pop up. I will send you helpful comments, suggestions, and even demonstrations on my sax. This is also a great way to get you focused while you’re practicing. By listening to yourself on a recording, you learn to be your own best critic and you will improve a lot faster.
